Table of contents This page contains links to sample FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) files from various sources. These files do not necessarily conform to all the latest FITS format recommendations, as can be determined by testing the file with the FITS File Verifier. Individual Sample FITS Files Most of the following sample FITS files were obtained from the MAST (Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes) data archive.Telescope/InstDescriptionHST WFPC IIHST (Hubble Space Telescope) WFPC (Wide Field and Planetary Camera) II 800 x 800 x 4 primary array data cube containing the four CCD (charge-coupled device) images, plus a table extension containing world coordinate parameters. This sample file has been trimmed to 200 x 200 x 4 pixels to save disk space.HST WFPC IIWFPC II 1600 x 1600 primary array mosaic constructed from the four individual CCD chips. (Image has been trimmed to 100 x 100 pixels to save disk space).HST FOCFOC (Faint Object Camera) (1024 x 1024) primary array image, plus a table extension containing world coordinate parameters.HST FOSFOS (Faint Object Spectrograph) 2 x 2064 primary array spectrum containing the flux and wavelength arrays, plus a small table extension.HST HRSHRS (High Resolution Spectrograph) 2000 x 4 primary array spectrum, plus a small table extension.HST NICMOSNICMOS (Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer) null primary array plus five image extensions (270 x 263) containing the science, error, data quality, samples, and time images.HST FGSFGS (Fine Guidance Sensor) file with a 89688 x 7 two-dimensional primary array and one table extension. The primary array contains a time series of seven astrometric quantities.Astro UITAstro1 UIT (Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope) (512 x 512) primary array image.IUE LWPIUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) LWP (Long-Wavelength Prime) spectrum contained in vector columns of a binary table.EUVEEUVE (Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer) sky image and 2D spectra, contained in multiple image extensions, with associated binary table extensions. The first image extension has been rebinned by a factor of four to save disk space.Random GroupsThis example file illustrates the Random Groups FITS file format which has the keywords NAXIS1 = 0 and GROUPS = T. This format has been used almost exclusively for applications in radio interferometry and should not be used for applications outside of this field. It is recommended that new applications should use FITS binary tables to store this type of data. This example file comes from the Classic AIPS (Astronomical Image Processing System) 'DDT' (Dirty Dozen Test) benchmarking suite. Sample FITS Files From NRAO These FITS files were collected by Don Wells and were originally available on the NRAO website. These are relatively early examples of FITS usage, so they do not necessarily conform to the latest FITS format recommendations.Sample Files From Various Facilities Astrophysical Data Facility (ADC/NASA/GSFC) Sample Tables adctest1.fitsadctest2.fitsadctest3.fits Binary Table Examples dddtsuvdata.fitsdddtsuvdata.listmddtsapcln.fitsmddtsapcln.listswp06542llg.fitsswp06542llg.listtestdata.fitstestdata.list 3D Data Cube ngc6503.fitsngc6503.listngc6503.readme Hierarchical Grouping group1.fitsgroup1.hdrgroup1.listgroup2.fitsgroup2.hdrgroup2.list Hubble Space Telescope HST Cover Letter (TXT)w0bs0102t_c0h.Zw0bs0102t_c0h.fit.gzw0bs0102t_c0h.tarw0bu0101t_c0h.fit.gzw0bu0101t_c0h.tarw0bu0102t_c0h.fit.gzw0bu0102t_c0h.tarw0bv0102t_c0h.fit.gzw0bv0102t_c0h.tarw0bw0103t_c0h.fit.gzw0cg0108t_c0h.fit.gzw0ck0101t_c0h.fit.gzx0bq0102t_c0h.fit.gzx0bq0102t_c1h.fit.gzx0bq0102t_d0h.fit.gzx0bq0102t_shh.fit.gzx0c80106t_c0h.fit.gzx0c80106t_c1h.fit.gzx0c80106t_d0h.fit.gzx0c80106t_shh.fit.gzx0c90101t_c0h.fit.gzx0c90101t_c1h.fit.gzx0c90101t_c1h.tarx0c90101t_d0h.fit.gzx0c90101t_d0h.tarx0c90101t_shh.fit.gzx0cj010bt_c0h.fit.gzx0cj010bt_c1h.fit.gzx0cj010bt_d0h.fit.gzx0cj010bt_shh.fit.gzx0cj010ct_c0h.fit.gzx0cj010ct_c1h.fit.gzx0cj010ct_d0h.fit.gzx0cj010ct_shh.fit.gz IMAGE Extensions swp05569slg.fitsswp05569slg.listvogtstar_awt.fitsvogtstar_awt.list Single Disk Radio Data gbfits.txtgbfits2.fitsgbfits2.list World Coordinate System (WCS) Examples gls.fitsgls.lstm82opt.fitsm82opt.lstm82rad.fitsm82rad.lstngc1316o.fitsngc1316o.lstngc1316r.fitsngc1316r.lst XTE X-ray Satellite Data FIHX_587412a-5874264.fitsFIHX_587412a-5874264.txtreadme.htm Year-2000 DATE Keyword Examples interoperability.txtnewdate.fits.gznewdate.lsty2000m1.fits.gzy2000m1.lsty2000m2.fits.gzy2000m2.lstyear2000.txt Test Data Sets FITS Test Tape 4b FITS Test Tape 4b (FTT4B), a collection of FITS files produced in the early 80s in order to test FITS readers and demonstrate the versatility of FITS as a format.file001.fitsfile001.listfile002.fitsfile003.fitsfile004.fitsfile005.fitsfile005.listfile006.fitsfile007.fitsfile008.fitsfile009.fitsfile009.listfile010.fitsfile011.fitsfile012.fitsfile013.fitsfile014.fitsfile015.fitsfile016.fitsfits-test-tape-4.pdffits-test-tape-4.psfits-test-tape-4.texfits-test-tape-4b.pdffits-test-tape-4b.psfits-test-tape-4b.tex Headers A collection of FITS files produced by Barry Schlesinger which test various syntactic errors of headers.aaareadme.docbitpix13.fitsbitpixq2.fitsdifferent.fitsdupkey.fitsdupkey.vfendequal.fitsextraxis.fitsfalsend.fitsgood.fitslatenaxis.fitslatenaxis.vfmissaxis.fitsnoequal.fitsnoequal.vfnosimple.fitsqin10.fitsqin10.vfshuffle.fitsshuffle.vfsimple2nd.fitssimplef.fitssimplew.fitssizeprob.fitssizeprob.vfxtracard.fitsxtracard.vf Incunabula A collection of the oldest FITS files known, including a copy of the first FITS file which passed in interchange between two observatories.first-uv.fitsfirst-uv.vffirst.fitsfirst.listfirst.vfm87-32.fitsm87-32.listm87-32.vfmndrll-8.fitsmndrll-8.vfmssso82sharp1.fitssharp1.lstsharp2.fitssharp2.lstsharp3.fitssharp3.lstorion-16.fitsorion-16.vf PG93 A collection of test files produced by Preben Grosbol in order to test FITS readers for implementation of support for the full set of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) cases (infinities, NaNs, etc) and to test support for the proposed BINTABLE and IMAGE extensions.pg92_readme.txtThe IAU FITS WG Testfiles (PDF)pg93-email.txtpg93_readme.txttst0001.fitstst0001.listtst0001.vftst0002.fitstst0002.listtst0003.fitstst0003.listtst0004.fitstst0004.listtst0005.fitstst0005.listtst0006.fitstst0006.listtst0007.fitstst0007.listtst0008.fitstst0008.listtst0009.fitstst0009.listtst0010.fitstst0010.listtst0010.vftst0011.fitstst0011.listtst0012.fitstst0012.listtst0012.vftst0013.fitstst0013.listtst0014.fitstst0014.listtst0014.vf
