Workshop Description
The 2025 NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Open Source Science Data Repositories Workshop will take place August 25 to 27, 2025 in Huntsville, AL. Save the date!
Hosted by the Data and Analysis Services Project (DASP), this two and a half day workshop aims to bring together data officers, repository data stewards, NASA-funded data producers, and NASA Office of the Chief Science Data Officer (OCSDO) leadership to collaboratively discuss current issues and identify potential scientific data and information solutions that can be developed and implemented across NASA SMD repositories.
The theme of the workshop is “Advancing Science Through Shared Governance and Collaboration.” Interactive activities and sessions will cover various topics proposed by data stewards and will aim to improve SMD-wide governance processes. During the workshop, participants will be able to critically review activities of the past year and clearly identify new priorities for DASP and division repositories. All participants will gain a greater understanding of the SMD repositories and use the workshop to form a stronger and more cohesive community.
The key objectives of the workshop are to:
- Foster and strengthen a community of practice around SMD governance and science data stewardship.
- Socialize and obtain feedback on current SMD governance activities.
- Identify common pain points and ways to maximize efficiencies across SMD data management.
- Collectively determine what must be archived and how.
- Identify community needs and how best to meet those needs to move everyone closer to effective open science practices.
The workshop will take place at the Jackson Center. The event space includes large conference rooms and breakout/discussion rooms for all planned activities. Each room will accommodate virtual attendance options. There is no registration fee. Registration will open in June with a link on this webpage.
The workshop agenda will be added when finalized this summer.
