The second ESA-NASA Workshop on AI Foundation Models for Earth Observation will take place from May 19-22 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. This event brings NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) experts together with scientists, AI researchers, and students to engage around AI foundation models as applied to Earth observation, climate, weather and Earth sciences. The objectives of the workshop include:

  • Provide a forum for scientific and application-based exchange on foundation models applied to Earth observation and Earth science data (including atmosphere)
  • Discuss relevant science and applications of these models
  • Present the latest advancements of current AI techniques which further the state of foundation models
  • Identify challenges, knowledge gaps and limitations in the current state-of-the-art in foundation models and formulate a roadmap with priority research themes and possible novel approaches
  • Learn how to effectively utilize foundation models in practical applications across various domains
  • Foster sharing and access of key datasets, models, and benchmarking
  • Investigate the applicability and potential of foundation models in commercial Earth observation products and services
  • Inspire early-career scientists and researchers
  • Define emerging areas in this field
